Olson Statement on President Obama Offshore Drilling Announcement3/31/10
Rep. Pete Olson issued the following statement today in response to President Obama’s announcement regarding offshore drilling:
“The President’s announcement today regarding expanded offshore drilling is a step in the right direction, albeit at a slow pace. While opening up any portion of the OCS for responsible energy development appears to be a great step forward, this decision is far from final, and rejects the 2010-2015 lease plans and waits until 2012 to implement a new plan.
“According to a study by the American Energy Alliance, offshore drilling has the potential to create millions of new American jobs and could provide more than $2 trillion in new government revenue at the local, state, and federal level at a time when our economy desperately needs help.
“A delay of offshore drilling for at least another two years, merely delays any positive job growth that could put our nation back on track while also reducing our dependency on foreign sources of oil. I urge the President to consider fast tracking any efforts to open up offshore oil production and expand the areas he is willing to consider.”
